Mangaluru, Karnataka – In a significant boost for connectivity and tourism along India's scenic west coast, the Mangaluru Central–Madgaon Vande Bharat Express was flagged off today January 4, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The high-speed train, touted as a game-changer for the region, promises a significantly reduced travel time between the two coastal cities, fostering economic growth and enhancing tourist experiences.
The inaugural run witnessed enthusiastic crowds at both Mangaluru Central and Madgaon stations. "This train is a blessing for regular commuters like me," said Suresh Bhat, a businessman from Mangaluru. "The shorter travel time will allow us to make day trips for work or leisure easily." The train, equipped with modern amenities including Wi-Fi, comfortable seating, and advanced safety features, is expected to attract a large number of passengers, both tourists and commuters.
The journey, previously taking around eight to ten hours by conventional trains, is now expected to be completed in approximately 5.5 hours, a reduction of around 40%. This considerable time saving will be a major draw for travellers, encouraging more people to explore the rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes of Karnataka and Goa.
“This train will not only boost tourism but also significantly improve business opportunities between Karnataka and Goa,” said Ashok Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager of Southern Railway. The official also highlighted the positive impact the train will have on local businesses and employment opportunities.
The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express is part of the Indian government's ambitious plan to expand high-speed rail connectivity across the country. This route specifically targets the burgeoning tourism sector in the region, connecting popular destinations like Mangaluru, Udupi, Murudeshwar, and Gokarna in Karnataka with Goa’s beaches and historical sites.
The train will operate six days a week, with a departure time of 6:00 AM from Mangaluru Central and 3:00 PM from Madgaon. Ticket bookings are already open through various online and offline platforms. The introduction of this service marks a significant milestone in improving rail infrastructure and boosting the economies of coastal Karnataka and Goa. The project is also seen as a step towards reducing the carbon footprint through the promotion of a faster, more efficient mode of transportation.
