Bengaluru, December 20, 2024 – The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) announced a 15% increase in bus fares across all its services, effective January 4, 2025. The hike, attributed to rising fuel costs and operational expenses, has sparked concerns among commuters who are already grappling with rising inflation.
The KSRTC, in a press release issued late Tuesday evening, cited a significant surge in diesel prices and increased maintenance costs as the primary reasons behind the fare revision. The corporation stated that the previous fare structure had become unsustainable, impacting its ability to maintain its fleet and provide efficient services.
"We understand this increase will impact our passengers, and this decision was not taken lightly," said a KSRTC spokesperson. "However, the substantial increase in operational costs necessitates this revision to ensure the continued viability and smooth functioning of the KSRTC."
The 15% hike will apply to all types of KSRTC buses, including ordinary, express, and luxury services. The revised fare structure will be displayed at all bus stands and on the KSRTC website starting December 27th, 2024. Passengers can also access the updated fares through the KSRTC mobile app.
The announcement has been met with mixed reactions. While some commuters expressed understanding, citing the rising cost of living, others voiced their discontent, arguing that the hike disproportionately affects low-income individuals who heavily rely on public transport.
Student organizations and several opposition parties have already criticized the move, calling it insensitive and demanding the government intervene to reconsider the decision. They have called for a public hearing and a detailed explanation of the KSRTC's financial status to justify the extent of the fare increase.
The KSRTC has assured commuters that it is committed to improving its services and is investing in upgrading its fleet and infrastructure. The corporation also hinted at exploring further cost-cutting measures to mitigate the impact of the fare hike on passengers in the long term. However, details regarding these measures remain unclear. The coming days will likely see further debate and discussion surrounding this significant fare increase.
