Lusaka, Zambia – A Zambian police officer has been suspended after allegedly releasing 13 suspects from custody while intoxicated on New Year's Eve. The incident, which has sparked outrage and calls for stricter disciplinary action within the force, unfolded at the Lusaka Central Police Station.
According to reports, the unnamed officer, assigned to night duty, became heavily intoxicated during the New Year's celebrations. He subsequently unlocked the cells containing the 13 suspects, who were being held on various charges ranging from petty theft to assault. The suspects, initially confused, were reportedly released without any official paperwork or further instructions.
The incident came to light when a fellow officer discovered the empty cells during a routine check in the early hours of January 1st. A frantic search ensued, resulting in the apprehension of several of the released suspects. However, others remain at large.
"This is a serious breach of protocol and a gross dereliction of duty," stated Police Spokesperson, Esther Katongo, in a press conference this morning. "The officer's actions have undermined public trust and jeopardized ongoing investigations. A full internal investigation is underway, and disciplinary action, including potential criminal charges, will be taken."
The police have confirmed the suspended officer is facing charges of negligence, dereliction of duty, and potentially aiding and abetting the escape of prisoners. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also pledged a thorough review of security procedures at police stations nationwide to prevent similar incidents.
The incident has prompted widespread criticism on social media, with many Zambians expressing their frustration and demanding accountability. Concerns are also being raised about the potential implications for the ongoing cases involving the released suspects, particularly for victims who may now find it harder to obtain justice.
The 13 suspects who have been re-apprehended are currently back in custody, awaiting their court appearances. The police are appealing to the public for information regarding the whereabouts of the remaining suspects still at large. The investigation into this embarrassing and potentially dangerous incident is expected to continue for several weeks.
